Florida's energy consumption will increase by 25% in the next two decades.  Also, workforce losses due to retirement and attrition will require a completely new workforce within the next 2 decades. Finally, focus on energy efficiency and  smart grid technologies will create additional workforce needs. These three factors have converged to demand a statewide education program that will produce the workforce trained at the level necessary to meet Florida's energy needs. 
The Employ Florida Banner Center for Energy is a leading resource in the state for energy talent development. We develop training to keep Florida's energy industry globally competitive by ensuring businesses have access to talent and our workforce is able to find employment as well as advancement in their current careers. Specifically,

  • IRSC program, and those of our education partners, will give students the real-world skills they need to take their careers to the next level in a high-growth energy industry.
  • The Banner Center for Energy connects graduates directly with businesses that are looking for energy workers who have the skills offered by our targeted training.
  • The Banner Center for Energy has courses offer industry certifications and/or college credit.
Types of Training
1. Entry Level

These include 1 year and less courses, certificates, or programs designed for entry into the energy industry.  Examples include electric distribution utility skills worker program at Lake-Sumter Community College.
2. Advanced Level

Primarily 2 year AS degrees focused on a positions on the power generation side. Examples include electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation and controls technician programs offered at IRSC and Miami Dade College.
3. Skills Upgrade

Short courses and certificates in other energy applications. This could include examples such as the Solar Contractor Licensing offered in a 6 week course at IRSC.
