IRSC to double power plant training program with grant; workers needed.

Indian River State College is expanding its Power Plant training program, thanks to a $150,000 grant from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. 

The grant is in response to an increasing national and statewide demand for nuclear technician.

The nuclear industry stands to lose about 35 percent of its workforce as Baby Boomers begin to retire in droves in the next decade, and training programs have not been able to turn out certified technicians fast enough to answer the needs, according to an NRC release…Read More

FORT PIERCE — Kyle Goldberg’s friends may be pounding pavement hunting for work in St. Lucie County where unemployment has topped 12 percent, but at 22 and fresh out of college, he has landed a job at the nuclear power plant.

Goldberg of Port St. Lucie is one of 12 graduates of Indian River State College’s Power Plant Technology Institute hired by Florida Power & Light on Tuesday after they each received an associate in science degree in May.

Goldberg will go into an instrumentation and control job where he’ll work on temperature sensors, pressure gauges and the like, at a starting salary of $45,000 annually…Read More
